Scientific Research on Australian Citrus

Australia has six species of native Citrus; the highest number of any country in the world. These are C. australasica (Finger lime), C. australis (Gympie lime), C. garrawayi (Mount White lime), C. glauca (Desert lime), C. gracilis (Kakadu lime), and C. inodora (Russel River lime). However, many of these species have not been scientifically explored – particularly with regard to the nutritional composition of their fruit. Joel’s PhD project aims to compare the nutritional value, chemical composition and bioactive properties of fruit from the 6 native Australian Citrus species, as well as comparing their composition to commercial (introduced) Citrus species. Additionally, the geographic and temporal variation in nutritional quality will be investigated for selected species. The results will highlight the unique nutritional and chemical features of native Australia Citrus, and may provide direction for the future commercialisation and marketing of these species.

Biography

Biography

Joel Johnson is a second-year PhD student at the University of Queensland. His research project focuses on the nutritional composition and bioactive properties of native Australian citrus species. It aims to compare the nutritional value and potential health benefits of our native species against current imported commercial citrus species, such as oranges, limes and lemons.

Joel has an impressive academic track record, with over 100 publications and conference presentations, which have attracted over 2,500 citations. He was recently listed as one of the top 2% of scientists in the world.
